Burkina Faso

Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP) is one of the five institutes of the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University of Ouagadougou which have the same status as the faculties. Its main mission is to conduct research and training. ISSP, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Georges Guiella and Fiacre Bazie, completed six rounds of the PMA2020 family planning survey  in Burkina Faso from 2014-2018. 

In collaboration with FHI-360, questions on contraceptive acceptability were added in 2016. In 2016 and 2017, ISSP completed two rounds of remote data collection via phone calls.

ISSP completed two rounds of PMA Nutrition surveys in 2017 and 2018, measuring the nutritional status of women and children, including mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measurements. PMA Agile data were collected in two urban areas from facilities and clients.

La PMA utilise une technologie mobile innovante pour soutenir des enquêtes à faible coût et à rotation rapide permettant de surveiller les principaux indicateurs de santé et de développement. Les enquêtes sont remplies par des recenseurs résidents, téléchargées sur un serveur central via un réseau de données mobile, nettoyées et analysées. Les résultats sont diffusés peu de temps après.

Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP) (Higher Institute of Population Studies) of the University of Ouagadougou

Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP) is one of the five institutes of the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University of Ouagadougou which have the same status as the faculties. Its main mission is to conduct research and training. In terms of research, ISSP is organized around 3 research units: the Population and Health Research Unit, the Population and Education Research Unit and the Mobility, Housing and Environment Research Unit. In addition to these 3 units, there is a transversal research platform, the Ouagadougou Demographic Surveillance System (ODSS). 
In terms of training, ISSP currently offers 2 master's degrees (a professional master's degree in population and health and a master's degree in population science research). In addition to these 2 master’s degrees, there is a Bachelor degree in social statistics and many short-term training courses for professionals.

Georges Guiella

Georges Guiella, PhD

Dr. Georges Guiella is a professor and Deputy Director of the Higher Institute of Population Sciences (ISSP) at the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University in Ouagadougou. He is also the Director of the Francophone Hub for PMA. His research experiences include sexual and reproductive health, particularly that of adolescents and youth, including family planning and abortion. He also has an experience in evaluating Integrated Community Case Management of childhood diseases in the communities (iCCM). Dr. Guiella obtained his Master's degree in Demography from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) and his Doctorate in Demography from the University of Montreal (Canada).

Fiacre Bazie, M. Sc. , M.IH.

Mr. Fiacre Bazie provides technical support for the implementation of the PMA surveys in Burkina Faso and in the countries of the Ouagadougou Partnership. He provides support for the research protocols conception/adaptation, local IRB approbation, training of field staff and coordinating data collection and dissemination activities. Mr. Bazie has a Master degree of Sociology from the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University of Ouagadougou and a Master degree of International Health from the Senghor University of Alexandria.

Francophone Regional Hub Deputy Director

Dr. Yentéma Onadja

Yentéma Onadja, Ph.D.

Dr. Yentéma Onadja supervises the technical aspects of the surveys for the Francophone Regional Hub of the PMA project. This includes managing analysis and the development of reports and manuscripts for the survey modules implemented for the Hub. Dr. Onadja is currently an Assistant Professor in Demography, Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Statistics at the Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP). He worked as a Research Officer at the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD) of Burkina Faso from 2008 to 2013. Trained in both demography and public health, his research interests focus on the health and well-being of mothers, children, adolescents and the elderly, as well as on the evaluation of public policies. In that capacity, he has coordinated numerous research projects and expertise work both nationally and internationally. Dr. Onadja has expertise in both cross-sectional and longitudinal data collection and analysis.

Guy Martial Bai

Guy Martial Bai

Guy Martial BAI, is in charge of data management and analysis for the PMA project in Burkina Faso and as a Research Assistant at the Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP) in Ouagadougou. In this position, he is involved in the monitoring of development projects dealing with family planning, nutrition and other public health issues. He has experience in the design of electronic data collection tools on the one hand. On the other hand, he acts as a specialist in the management, processing and analysis of quantitative data. In his capacity as PMA Data Team Lead, he is involved in training and technical support for other French-speaking teams of the PMA platform. Guy Martial BAI holds a degree in Statistical Engineering from the National School of Statistics and Economic Analysis (ENSAE) in Dakar.
